Highway Network Surge Protectors: Principles, Applications, and Key Protection Technologies

The highway network system includes monitoring cameras, signal lights,

data transmission equipment, communication base stations, and other

facilities. These devices are often exposed to outdoor environments and

are susceptible to lightning interference. Therefore, surge protective

devices (SPDs) play a critical protective role in the system. A deep

understanding of their working principles contributes to efficient

maintenance and management.

Basic Working Principle of Surge Protectors

Surge protectors are primarily used to guide or divert lightning strike

currents, protecting connected equipment from damage caused by

overvoltage. Their core mechanism relies on internal nonlinear components (such as varistors and gas discharge tubes) that rapidly conduct when

the surge voltage exceeds a set threshold, diverting the overcurrent to

the grounding system.

Pathways of Lightning Wave Intrusion

Lightning can invade the system through direct strikes, induction, or

conduction. Lightning waves often enter highway network devices via

power supply lines, communication cables, or signal lines, causing

instantaneous high voltage and large currents that seriously threaten

the safety of electronic components.

Response and Recovery Mechanism

After a lightning strike, the internal components of the surge protector can quickly return from a conductive state to a high-resistance state, cutting off the discharge path and restoring normal

line operation. The surge protector activates only when overvoltage

occurs and does not affect system operation under normal conditions.

Stage-by-Stage Analysis of the Working Process

Normal Operation State: When the system voltage is within the standard

range, the surge protector remains in a high-impedance state and does not affect equipment operation.

Occurrence of Lightning Strike or Surge:

The lightning wave propagates along the line to the surge protector,

causing a sharp rise in voltage.

When the voltage exceeds the set threshold, the varistor or gas

discharge tube rapidly conducts, diverting the current to the ground.

By limiting the voltage amplitude, the backend equipment is ensured to

remain within a safe withstand voltage range.

After the surge subsides, the surge protector automatically returns to

a high-resistance state and enters standby mode.

Installation and Maintenance Recommendations

Scientific Layout: Surge protectors should be installed close to the

protected equipment, and multi-level protection should be configured as needed. A rational layout is

particularly critical in widely distributed highway systems.

Regular Maintenance: Inspections should be intensified during high-frequency lightning seasons, including checking the grounding status,

external integrity, and whether the action indicator is normal.

Common Types of Surge Protectors for Highways

Power Surge Protectors: Installed at power supply entry points to protect the power lines of monitoring, toll, and communication equipment.

Signal Surge Protectors: Used for communication and data cables (such

as fiber optics and Ethernet interfaces) to ensure the safety of cameras and data transmission devices.

Integrated Surge Protectors: Combine both power and signal protection

functions, suitable for multi-channel protection scenarios.

Highway surge protectors significantly reduce the risk of lightning

damage by detecting and rapidly diverting surge currents, enhancing

system stability and equipment service life.
