A Comprehensive Guide to Substation Lightning Protection and Grounding System Design

Lightning protection and grounding systems represent a critical yet often overlooked aspect of electrical infrastructure planning. While seasoned engineers recognize their importance, knowledge gaps persist across the

industry. These systems are particularly vital for substations – the heart of power distribution networks. A single lightning strike can trigger widespread blackouts and cause permanent damage to internal

insulation of electrical equipment. So what does it take to build

effective protection? And which international standards should guide

these decisions?

Lightning Protection Systems: Three Key Components

Lightning Mesh Protection
Designed for large rooftop areas on flat or sloped structures, lightning mesh systems begin with perimeter air terminals along edges and

projections. Typically constructed from φ12-16mm galvanized steel rods supported by specialized brackets, the

system creates a comprehensive grid pattern of 6x6m, 6x10m, or 10x10m

sections across the entire roof surface.

Lightning Strips (Bonding Rings)
These continuous conductors protect high-rise building facades from side flashes. Installed using φ12mm steel

rods or 12x4mm flat bars embedded within perimeter beams, they integrate with structural reinforcement through welded connections. All external

metal components – including window frames and architectural features – require multiple bonding points to the strip system. While independent

grounding should maintain <10Ω resistance, integration with the main

grounding grid is recommended.

Surge Protective Devices (SPDs)
As primary protection for substation equipment, Type 1 SPDs install

downstream of the main circuit breaker in 380V low-voltage switchgear. Characterized by high current handling capacity and

low residual voltage, they provide baseline protection for all connected loads. Optional explosion-proof SPD enclosures offer flexible installation solutions.
Recommended conductors: 10mm² for phase/neutral, ≥16mm² for grounding.

Upstream protection should employ 100A fuses where coordination permits.

Grounding System Implementation Guidelines

Ground Electrode Configuration
For individual distribution transformer neutral grounding, vertical

electrodes (2.5m length) spaced 5m apart interconnect via horizontal

flat steel at 0.8m depth, forming a complete electrode array.

Critical Requirements for Substation Grounding

Total ground resistance ≤4Ω, mandating horizontal grid expansion if

measurements exceed this value

Underground components maintain ≥0.8m burial depth with peripheral

rounding (R=3.5m)

Backfilling with low-resistivity soil directly over horizontal conductors

Welded connections requiring 2x flat width or 6x rod diameter overlap

with asphalt coating

Dedicated down conductors for all equipment structures/cable trenches

avoiding serial connections

Continuous main conductors rerouted around foundation conflicts without

cutting

Hot-dip galvanized materials per IEC 62305 installation standards

Multiple indoor-outdoor interconnections via wall-mounted flat bars

Structural steel bonding through extracted reinforcement connections

Transformer grounding separation ≥15m from main grid connection point
